Garl Draughon, 87, passed away from a sudden illness on October 19, 2017 at Wake Medical Hospital in Raleigh, NC. He was born at home in Yadkin County, NC to Samuel Russell Daughon and Pearl Wagoner Draughon. He is predeceased by his parents; his brother Glen Thomas; his grandson Samuel Lawrence and his sister Ruby Draughn Hayes.
Garl graduated from Boonville High School in Boonville, NC and Appalachian State University in Boone, NC in 1957. He was an athletic trainer and a member of the “A” Club. He taught social studies and English grades 9-12 for 16 years in West Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina. He also coached football, basketball and baseball. His Farmington, NC Little League team won a county championship under his leadership. After teaching, Garl worked in the furniture and insurance industries.
Garl is survived by his wife of 56 years, Bobbye Shumaker Draughon of Garner, NC; son Dennis Russell Draughon; daughter-in-law Megan Miller Draughon; granddaughter, Frances Sanderling Draughon; grandson, Charles Samuel Draughon all of Clayton, NC; sister Ruth Harris of Jonesville, NC; brothers Gilmer and Grady Lee Draughn of Dobson, NC and Yadkinville, NC respectively.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 from 4:00 – 6:00PM at Montlawn funeral home. Memorial service to follow in the Montlawn Funeral Home chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the ASPCA in Garl’s name.
