Obituary for Jein Paul ""Ghia"" Newland (Sawyer)

JEIN PAUL NEWLAND
Jein Paul Newland “Ghia” went to be with her Savior the morning of June 3, 2017 at Sunrise Senior Living in Raleigh, North Carolina. Her passing came as a result of health complications from vascular dementia. Jein was born Geneva Ilene Sawyer, on July 3, 1930 in Maitland, West Virginia. She was the only daughter of Maggie Mae Sawyer and loved telling stories of her childhood years, growing up with her three brothers during difficult economic times in West Virginia.
Jein began a new life as a young teen, when she chose to leave West Virginia in eighth grade and came to North Carolina. Her hopes for a bright future became a reality soon after arriving, when she quickly fell in love with a Greyhound bus driver, Edwin Hazelton Paul. They soon married and became loving parents to a son and daughter. Always an eager learner, she chose to complete her high school education in her thirties. Soon after, she began studying philosophy at North Carolina State University graduating with honors. She was extremely proud to receive the opportunity to serve three summers as Dean of Women for the Summer Abroad Program at Oxford University in England, allowing both of her children the experience of traveling Europe as young adults. Jein loved traveling and experiencing other cultures, eventually visiting fourteen countries.
Jein had many interests that brought her much joy over the years. She was known for her hobbies of floral design and culinary skills. Jein had a great love and appreciation for art. Her flair for design allowed her to create inviting spaces for many local businesses, special events, and home interiors. Jein’s love for helping others was undeniable and selflessly shared her time between family, friends and causes that remained dear to her heart. She gave freely of her time at United Way and generously supported humanitarian efforts in the Congo. Jein spent time in church missions traveling to several countries. She supported her love for Native Americans by serving at the Sioux Reservation in South Dakota. However, time spent with her family & serving her local churches, Mount Olivet Baptist (Raleigh) and Fellowship of Christ (Cary), were her greatest joys of all.
Jein is survived by her two children, son-Jerry Lynn Paul (spouse-Lynda Bennett) and daughter-Nancy Paul Stephens (spouse-Bill) all reside in Raleigh. Her only grandchild, Jessica Stephens Franks (spouse-Zane Adam Franks) reside in Angier with Jein’s great-grandchildren, Chase Weston Franks and Olivia Jo Franks. Jein felt blessed to enjoy time with her family, especially her great-grandchildren.
Jein is also survived by one brother, Billy Brewster (Roanoke, Virginia) and his two daughters, Sherry Brewster Whitehead (Knoxville, Tennessee) and Tina Brewster Cowden (Roanoke, Virginia).
Jein provided unwavering friendship and support to her family and friends. She graciously loved everyone dearly and that love will have a lasting presence in all their lives.
Jein developed vascular dementia over the years following the loss of her second husband, Jim Newland in 2005.
The family is grateful for the loving staff at Sunrise Senior Living of Raleigh (Edwards Mill Road) that assisted with Jein’s daily needs.
The family appreciates all the prayers and support shown to them during this difficult time.
A private service has been arranged at Montlawn in Raleigh, which will be led by Pastor Tom Vestal. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to dementia research.
