Obituary for Cornie Medlin (Murray)

Cornie Murray Medlin, 101, died Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at Universal Health Care in Fuquay Varina. She was born in Apex, N.C. and grew up in the farming community of Duncan and Fuquay Springs, NC. She spent her adult life in Raleigh, NC. Cornie met and married Willard Thomas Medlin in 1939. To their union one child, Thomas Medlin was born. Cornie attended Lafayette High School in Harnett County and Handbarger Business School in Raleigh, NC. She worked in the food serve industry with A & P Tea Co., Colonial Stores and Barnes Grocery. Later, she worked in retail with Thalheimers, Macy’s and The Fabric House until she retired. Cornie loved gardening and especially enjoyed her azaleas which covered the front of her home each spring. Cornie was a faithful member and supporter of Temple Baptist Church since 1952 where she enjoyed singing in the Senior Choir. Cornie loved to dance and enjoyed attending dances at different community centers. Cornie was preceded in death by her husband, Willard in 1977; her parents, Bass Thomas Murray and Lettie Lewis; siblings, Osler D., Douglas W. and Bass T. Murray; sisters, Audrey Spencer Pleasants, Amber “Alma” Weaver, Elvie Roundy, Julia Lee and Zelma Jones. Cornie is survived by her son, Thomas L. Medlin and his wife Sally Hardee Medlin and many nieces and nephews. Services honoring the life of Cornie will begin with a visitation on Friday, August 12, 2016 at 10:30 am at Montlawn Funeral Home 2911 S. Wilmington St., Raleigh. Following the visitation, a graveside service will be held at 12 Noon at Montlawn Memorial Park, Dr. Charles Johnson will officiate; Allen Moody, soloist. The family wishes to thank the nurses and employees at Universal Health Care in Fuquay Varina for their love and support while “Ms. Cornie” was under their care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Cornie’s name to Temple Baptist Church, 1417 Clifton Street Raleigh, NC 27604 or a charity of your choice.
